Reading. For some, it is a delightful pastime. For others, it is the bane of their existence. Always causing guilt as others brag about how much they LOVE their new book. Some people even create a book club where they meet at a party like event to talk about the book they all read. You, on the other hand, might want a club where other non-readers get together to re-enact a middle school assembly where a strong man rips a book in half like a phone book. Unfortunately, those book club people are doing it right. So, it might be good to crack that book open every now and again.
As it turns out, it’s not just your body that needs exercise, your mind needs it as well. Reading is a great way to give your brain exercise. Some of the benefits of perusing a good book are:
The brain activity associated with reading improves your cognitive function, including the ability to concentrate, enhances memory and even problem-solving skills.
Reading regularly improves your communication skills, both written and verbal.
Even if you’re reading fiction, your critical thinking improves as you analyze the storyline.
If you have a short period of time, just reading an article will enhance your knowledge level.
Reading before bed signals the brain that it’s time to rest, which will cause you to sleep better. But remember that screens, such as an IPad or Kindle can keep you awake so you may want to put a good old-fashioned book on your nightstand.
As far as I’m concerned, the most important thing that reading can do is reduce stress. With the state of the world as it is, that is enough for me to cram my head in a book and never look up. A lot of our staff love to read! So come in and ask them for a recommendation on an enjoyable book to read!
