Dr. Andronica Handie, DPM, answers common questions on hammertoes, from help for hammertoes without surgery, running with toe spacers, and swelling after surgery.

1. What’s the best way to help hammertoes without surgery?

Hammertoes can’t be cured without surgery. But many people use toe spacers, taping, low-heeled shoes, foot exercises, and foot massage to help manage the pressure and pain. What else do you recommend?

Dr. Handie: For many people with hammertoes, I suggest using gel pads #61188 from AliMed. I also tell them to wear wide shoes at all times for pain reduction.

If toes stretch to their normal length with standing, reverse rigorous stretching may help. No guarantee this will reverse the conditions, however.

2. How long does swelling last after hammertoe surgery?

We hear this question from people months after surgery for hammertoe repair. Will the swelling and stiffness ever go away?

Dr. Handie: Swelling is common with any joint surgery, and can sometimes last up to 12 months. To speed this issue up, we sometimes offer Physical Therapy (PT). For some, a light compression with coban may help resolve the swelling faster, lightly placed daily. Therapy may also be needed if range of motion has been reduced.

3. Is it safe to run with toe spacers?

Dr. Handie: I have had runners try spacers with socks to secure the toe spacers. Comfort is the issue, but if tolerated, there are no hesitations in doing so.
