About the event
In order to combat a prevalent disease in the Hispanic community, Invictus Healthcare System is offering a free, informative educational seminar about diabetes on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
What: Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority in the United States. They accounting for 18 percent of the total population and expected to double by 2060. According to the National Healthcare Disparities Report, 35 percent of Latinos reported problems in receiving the medical care that they need. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation estimates that Latinos experience 30 to 40 percent poorer health outcomes than white Americans. This data confirms how race and ethnicity heavily influence a patient’s access to basic health needs and health insurance. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) conducted a survey to assess the differences in access to healthcare between Hispanics and non-Hispanics. The report showed that Hispanics are significantly less likely to have healthcare coverage, healthcare providers and a regular place of care compared to non-Hispanics. Hispanic respondents also reported having a medical care need in the past 12 months and were not able to treat it.
Who: Invictus Healthcare System’s primary care practitioner, Kelly Wratten APRN CNP, will be hosting the free seminar. Guadalupe Martinez, MA will be translating the seminar in Spanish.
Why: Invictus Healthcare System saw a need in the Oklahoma community of people that are struggling to receive medical attention and decided to change the way the company operates. In order to provide culturally inclusive care, Invictus Healthcare sought out physicians, medical assistants and employees that are Hispanic and fluent in both English and Spanish to help break the language barrier and create a comfortable environment. By holding an educational seminar, the Hispanic community is able to learn more about their overall health and start receiving the care that they need.
